Intrauterine insemination (IUI) - a type of artificial insemination - is a procedure to treat infertility.
Washed and concentrated sperm are placed in the uterus as the ovaries release one or more eggs for fertilization.
The ideal outcome of IUI is for sperm to swim into the fallopian tubes and fertilize the waiting egg, resulting in pregnancy. Depending on the cause of infertility, IUI can be coordinated with your regular cycle or fertility medications.
Every couple wants to have a proper family after some time. A couple's capability to conceive relies on multiple other factors. Intrauterine insemination is one of the most commonly used in couples who:
IUI is often combined with ovulation induction drugs as the first treatment for unexplained infertility.
>Drugs to obtain high-quality eggs and an IUI procedure are often the first treatments for infertility associated with endometriosis.
Your partner's semen analysis is the first step in a medical evaluation of infertility. It may reveal a lower-than-average sperm concentration, poor sperm motility (motility), or abnormal sperm size and shape (morphology).
Intrauterine insemination (IUi) can overcome some of these problems. Preparing sperm for transfer in uterus helps to separate normal, high motility sperm from low-quality sperm.
As you know, the cervix is located at the lower end of the uterus. Also, it provides the opening between the vagina and the uterus. The mucus produced by the cervix during ovulation offers the ideal environment for sperm to flow from the vagina to the fallopian tubes. However, if the cervical mucus is too thick, it may hinder the sperm's journey.
Additionally, the cervix itself may prevent sperm from contacting the egg. Scars, such as those caused by biopsies or other procedures, can cause the cervix to thicken. IUI bypasses the cervix, deposits sperm directly into the uterus, and increases the number of sperm available for waiting eggs.
IUI is also available for infertile women due to ovulation problems, including insufficient ovulation or a low number of eggs.
In rare cases, an allergy to proteins in semen can lead to infertility. Ejaculation into the vagina can cause redness, burning, and swelling where the semen comes into contact with the skin. A condom can protect you from symptoms, but it can also prevent pregnancy. If your sensitivity is severe, intrauterine insemination may be effective because many proteins in semen are removed before sperm can be inserted.
IUI is a relatively simple and safe procedure with a low risk of serious complications. Risks include:
Due to the procedure, there is a slight risk of infection.
Sometimes, putting a catheter into the uterus can cause a small amount of vaginal bleeding. This usually doesn't affect your chances of getting pregnant.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is not associated with an increased risk of multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, or more). But when combined with ovulation-stimulating drugs, the risk of multiple pregnancies increases significantly. Multiple pregnancies have higher chances than singleton pregnancies, including preterm birth and low birth weight.
The IUI requires careful coordination before the actual procedure:
Your partner provides a semen sample at our clinic because non-sperm elements in semen can cause reactions in a woman that interfere with fertilization, samples are washed in a way that separates highly motile sperm from other secretions. Pregnancy is more likely with a small, highly concentrated piece of healthy sperm.
Since the timing of IUI is critical, monitoring for signs of impending ovulation is vital. At us, an imaging method can allow your doctor to see your ovaries and egg growth (transvaginal ultrasound). You may also be given an injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) or a drug that makes you ovulate one or more eggs at the right time.
Most IUI is done a day or two after ovulation is detected. We will make a detailed plan for when and what to expect.
An IUI visit takes 15 to 20 minutes and is usually done in our hospital. The IUI procedure only takes a minute or two and does not require any medication or pain relievers. Our doctor or specially trained nurse performs the procedure.
While lying on the examination table, place your legs in the stirrups. Your caregiver inserts a speculum into your vagina, similar to how you feel during a Pap smear. During procedure, the doctor or nurse:
After the IUI, you can lie on your back for a short time. After the procedure, you can begin your normal daily activities. You may have some light spots for a day or two after procedure.
Do not hurry about getting the result; at least wait two weeks before taking a home pregnancy test. The test may soon yield results:
If your pregnancy hormones are not at measurable levels, the test may be negative when you are pregnant.
If you are taking a drug that stimulates ovulation, such as human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), the drug circulating in your body may indicate pregnancy when it is not.
If you are pregnant, we will closely monitor your pregnancy with blood tests and ultrasounds.
If you test negative, we will prepare a new course of treatment or consider other treatment options.
However, the same treatment is usually used for three to six months to increase the chance of pregnancy.
