Examination of cervix and uterus by using hysteroscope is called hysteroscopy. Hysteroscope is a thin, lighted, and flexible tube. Hysteroscopy can be used for doing biopsy (take sample tissue for tests), prevent bleeding by destroying tissues through burning by electric current, heat, chemical or by freezing. Hysteroscopy can be done with or without anesthesia.
Patient may need hysteroscopy for diagnose cause of infertility, Bleeding after menopause, abnormal uterine bleeding, removal of uterine scarring, polyps or fibroids, placement of birth control into fallopian tubes, biopsy, removal of endometrial lining, or abnormal pap test results etc. Hysteroscopy cannot be done if patient is pregnant.
Cost of hysteroscopy depends upon the nature of the procedure. Procedures which do not involve Operation Theater and anesthesia cost much less as compared to procedures which involves operation theater and anesthesia team.
