Overview Robotic Hysterectomy

In common hysterectomy surgery, a woman's uterus is removed. Aside from cesarean section, hysterectomy is women's most common surgical procedure. This procedure is done through a small incision, using a thin, lighted mirror (laparoscope) with a camera on end; it is called a laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Robotic hysterectomy, also known as robotic-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy, uses computer-controlled surgical instruments. The surgeon controls the movement of the computer from a computer station in the operating room. Compared with traditional laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon can control the robot's movement stably and precisely, making reaching tight spaces more accessible and obtaining a better surgical field of vision. However, research on this type of procedure continues to improve technique.

We may recommend this procedure if your uterus problems do not respond to other treatments. Robotic-assisted hysterectomy may be recommended for the following reasons:

  • Your incision will be smaller than with an open hysterectomy, no wound complication.
  • Your pain may be less, and your hospital stay may be shorter after surgery.
  • However, it may be convenient to recover at home.
  • It may reduce the risk of complications such as bleeding or infection.
  • Minute problems during the procedure are addressed due to 3D view
  • In case of adhesions and Fibrosis zoom in technique in robotic ensure safer surgery
  • Blood vessels and urinary tracks near the uterus are better visualized due to better camera control and precision, so less chance of bleeding and injury to other organs.

Complete Procedure of Robotic Hysterectomy

At some point before surgery, you will need a physical examination. The surgeon may order blood tests, a chest X-ray, or an electrocardiogram (EKG) to check your overall health. Be sure to tell your surgeon about any medicines you take at home, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter other drugs; you may be asked to stop taking aspirin or other medicine/drugs that thin your blood and increase bleeding.

Other points to skip:

  • Inform before the surgery if you or your family members have a history of reactions to general anesthesia.
  • If you smoke, you may need to quit smoking long before surgery.
  • During the day and night before surgery, you will be told when to stop eating and drinking. If you are under general anesthesia, you will usually not eat or drink after midnight or at least 8 hours before surgery.
  • Ask your surgeon if you should take your usual medications with a sip of water the morning of your surgery.

During Robotic Hysterectomy Surgery

This surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. Before surgery begins, an intravenous (IV) line will be activated so you can receive fluids and medicines to keep you relaxed and sleepy. If you are under general anesthesia, medications may be given intravenously so you can sleep, and a tube may be inserted in your throat to numb you and help you breathe during sleep.

You may be treated with antibiotics before surgery, and a catheter may be placed in your bladder to drain urine. You may have special stockings on your legs to help prevent blood clots. However, robotic hysterectomy surgery time is lessor than incisional surgery in expert hands even in complex cases.

Here's what can happen during surgery:

  • Make three or four small incisions near the navel.
  • Gas may be pumped into your abdomen to expand it and give the surgeon a better view and more room to work.
  • Insert the laparoscope into your abdomen. Other surgical tools will be inserted through other incisions.
  • The surgeon will attach the laparoscope and instruments to the computer's robotic arm.
  • Your surgeon will move to a remote-controlled area to perform the surgery.
  • The uterus will be cut into small pieces that can be removed through small incisions.
  • During robotic hysterectomy, the uterus can be removed through the vagina.
  • Depending on the reason for the hysterectomy, the entire uterus or just the portion above the cervix may be removed. The tubes and ovaries that connect to the uterus can also be removed only after discussion without gynecologist if needed.
  • After the surgery, the incision may be sutured with a stitch or two and covered with a small bandage.
  • At the end of the surgery, surgeon ensure that each step of surgery has been recorded, because it’s a video linked surgery monitored by many specialist at each step.
