In common hysterectomy surgery, a woman's uterus is removed. Aside from cesarean section, hysterectomy is women's most common surgical procedure. This procedure is done through a small incision, using a thin, lighted mirror (laparoscope) with a camera on end; it is called a laparoscopic hysterectomy.
Robotic hysterectomy, also known as robotic-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy, uses computer-controlled surgical instruments. The surgeon controls the movement of the computer from a computer station in the operating room. Compared with traditional laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon can control the robot's movement stably and precisely, making reaching tight spaces more accessible and obtaining a better surgical field of vision. However, research on this type of procedure continues to improve technique.
We may recommend this procedure if your uterus problems do not respond to other treatments. Robotic-assisted hysterectomy may be recommended for the following reasons:
At some point before surgery, you will need a physical examination. The surgeon may order blood tests, a chest X-ray, or an electrocardiogram (EKG) to check your overall health. Be sure to tell your surgeon about any medicines you take at home, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter other drugs; you may be asked to stop taking aspirin or other medicine/drugs that thin your blood and increase bleeding.
Other points to skip:
This surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. Before surgery begins, an intravenous (IV) line will be activated so you can receive fluids and medicines to keep you relaxed and sleepy. If you are under general anesthesia, medications may be given intravenously so you can sleep, and a tube may be inserted in your throat to numb you and help you breathe during sleep.
You may be treated with antibiotics before surgery, and a catheter may be placed in your bladder to drain urine. You may have special stockings on your legs to help prevent blood clots. However, robotic hysterectomy surgery time is lessor than incisional surgery in expert hands even in complex cases.
Here's what can happen during surgery:
After surgery, you will be taken to the recovery room for observation while you recover from anesthesia. Most people will stay in the hospital for 24 hours only in most cases. Here's what might happen during your hospital stay:
Follow up session
When you get home, it is essential to follow all instructions from your surgeon and follow up with follow-up appointments. Take any all medicines as directed. Some pain during early recovery is expected. Ask your surgeon what medications you should take for pain.
Here's what to expect during your recovery at home:
During your recovery, tell your surgeon any of the following:
In addition to recovering physical symptoms, you may experience emotional symptoms after surgery. After a hysterectomy, you will not be able to get pregnant, and your periods will stop. These losses sadden many women.
If your ovaries were removed during surgery, you might notice menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Some women may benefit from non hormonal drugs that control these symptoms depending upon the severity. Consult our gynecologist if you are observing menopausal symptoms.
It would be best if you discussed this with your healthcare team.
Robotic-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy is safe, but all procedures carry some risks. Some of the potential risks of having a hysterectomy using any technique include:
